Choosing cloth diapers is a bit more work than purchasing plastic bags of paper diapers and throwing them in the trash when they are soiled, but Cindy's childhood memories of the mountains of trash at the dump impacted her strong enough to make more environmentally sound choices in diapering her children.

When I was little, our family always took our own trash to the dump. No convenient garbage trucks for us. Seeing the vast acres of trash helped to mold my current vision of reducing diaper waste. I envision the huge mountain of stinky diapers one little baby would make.

I have been using cloth diapers for my son since he was a newborn. He's 2 1/2 now, and fully potty trained except for at night, when he wears toddler-size prefolds with a Bummis pull on cover. Now, I'm re-using the same small prefolds and covers for my little baby girl.

I'm a stay at home mom, and money also played a big part in my cloth diapering choice. With cheap prefolds, Snappis, and pull on covers, I spent only about $350 for the entire set, birth through potty training. I figured I would easily have "thrown away" at least $1,700 to diaper the kiddos with disposables.

My experience with cloth diapering has been a pretty easy road. I had researched a lot, so I haven't had too many leakage or smell problems. Lots of laundry, but as I hang up rows of white cloth diapers blowing in the summer wind, I breathe in the fresh scent of biodegradeable laundry soap and smile at my kids. I'm doing what I'm doing for them and their kids. I hope to pass on to them love for their planet.

Yes, it is a little harder than tossing disposable after disposable into the trash. My kids will see that I'm willing to do a little bit more extra work to make the world a better place for them, and hopefully they'll pass it on to their kids, too.
