Cloth Diaper Folding - Chinese Prefolds
The common misconception about Prefolds Diapers is that they do not require any cloth diaper folding - after all, they are "PRE-FOLDS", right?
The truth is that Prefolds, named for the multiple layers pre-folded and sewn the length of their absorbent center, still need to be folded in a way that best fits your child.
Cloth diaper folding can be intimidating at first, but it doesn't have to be. Just like everything else, it takes practice to become proficient, but with our step-by-step directions and a little bit of practice, you'll be folding cloth diapers in your sleep.
Try your hand at the Angel Fold.
The Angel Fold is one of the most popular ways to fold a prefold diaper. Also referred to as the "Angel Wrap", this is a versatile diaper folding technique and works most efficiently with wrap-style diaper covers, like the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap shown in the technique pictured below.
The wrap around wings of both the Prefold Diaper and the wrap-style covers provide a full coverage that helps contain even the nastiest messes, while ensuring a comfortable fit.
If you want to use a pull-on diaper cover, instead of a diaper wrap, you will need to secure the wings with Dritz diaper pins or a Snappi diaper fastener.
The Angel Fold - step by step.
1. Pull out one prefold diaper and one cloth diaper cover - in this case a Bummis Super Whisper Wrap. Lay your prefold diaper flat in front of you so that the serged ends are on top and bottom.

2. If folding into a wrap cover, place the prefold atop the wrap. The serged edges should be at the top and the bottom. Now, fold the bottom serged-edge of the prefold up towards the top serged edge of the cloth diaper (usually about 1/3 the height). If using a doubler for additional absorption, lay the doubler in the middle of the prefold diaper before folding the bottom up.

3. Now you will create a "V" shape nestled into the cloth diaper wrap by pulling the folded bottom, left corner over to the middle and then repeating it again by pulling the folded bottom, right corner across to the left.

4. If using a stay dry liner or a fleece topped doubler, this is the point where you can lay it atop the folded "V" you've just created. By placing it atop, rather than wrapping it within the cloth diaper, it ensures that baby's skin is against the fleece fabric so it can do its job of wicking moisture away from baby's skin.
5. Lay baby atop the prefold diaper so that the top serged edge is right at the baby's waistline in the back.
6. Bring the prefold diaper up between baby's legs. At this time, you can adjust the rise by letting out some of the fold in front.
Please note: Some of our customers like to wrap the back corners/sides around to the front and fasten with diaper pins or a Snappi at this point. It isn't necessary with a wrap-style diaper cover, but it certainly is another way to ensure the diaper stays secure around baby's legs to add extra protection against leaks.

7. After the prefold is adjusted to the baby, bring the cloth diaper wrap up between your baby's legs as well. The diaper cover should extend beyond the cloth diaper at the waist to keep moisture from seeping out to the waistline of baby's clothes.

8. Then, just wrap the tabs on the diaper cover's back left and right "wings" around to the front and secure on the velcro panel. Very simple. Very secure.

This same cloth diaper fold can be used with ANY diaper cover. Instead of laying it within the diaper cover, simply lay it on the diaper changing table and proceed. Then, once the diaper is secured with diaper pins or a Snappi Diaper Fastener you can pull-on or snap-on any style diaper cover you choose.
